IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - The Future of the Wiki

Hello everyone. Today I am here to announce the biggest change to the wiki so far and the biggest that will likely ever affect it. As some of you may have noticed, I have been absent for quite some time here. However, this has not been time wasted. For several months now, I have been working with the heads of the World War II Forums and WW2 Talk on a project called the World War II Open Resource Group. Using the same mediawiki software, WW2.org is essentially a project like ours, yet with many benefits unavailable to us. Thus, I announce the merger between our projects, the WWII Wiki and WW2.org. I have brought this up in private to some editors here and now I make the announcement public. On our years here, Wikia has been a very good host…

WWII Fact: Today, British general Bernard Montgomery's Eighth Army captured the city of Syracuse in Sicily in 1943.

Hello everyone once again! It being a couple of months since the last wiki newsletter, I decided that it was time for a new post. Quite a few changes have been implemented on the wiki in the months after the last newsletter, particularly in the past couple of weeks. Most noticeably perhaps is the new "Featured Articles" module that has been added to the wiki right rail. Ideally, this will give our very best articles more exposure and traffic. Also quite visible on the front page of the wiki is the improvement drive module that showcases what groups of articles and topics we want to focus on for the time being. More informatio…

WWII Fact: Today in 1945, Soviet troops under the command of Georgi Zhukov crossed the original German-Polish border of 1939 and entered into Germany. Hello everyone! Welcome to a new year of new goals! As always, the newsletter is here to fill you in on what you may have missed in the past couple of months. For starters, one notable addition to the wiki has been our new set of official wiki avatars for use by any and all who wish to do so!

They can be found here: World War II Wiki:Avatars

No Time to Edit V2

I've noticed in my several years here working on the wiki a saddening fact that I think can be prevented. Perhaps the most common reason I've heard as to why readers don't contribute is that they lack the time to do so. However, I would like to present the idea that there is still a way to contribute even when one has the idea they lack time. For one, it has often been noted that taking time off of a problem and completely distracting oneself with other activities before returning to the problem greatly increases overall creativity. As such, I can personally recommend the practice of editing the wiki to relax or to focus.

Also importantly, by editing the wiki, you can be assured that you are helping to build a better public knowledge of the…

Contest Over and a New Year

Hello everyone! Today is December 25, 2015 and our 'We'll be Home by Christmas!' contest has thus ended. Good job to all those who helped us try to reach our goal, and while that goal remains, many new articles were added and the wiki ultimately came out better because of it. Furthermore, not wanting to leave the most supportive users with nothing, the rewards will be handed out as previously planned. The overall winner of the contest was UM98, followed closely by Sean4333 and in third place, Unknown User 18. Honorable mention goes to Triangle21. I will be contacting each of you for your appropriate prizes.

The Future of the Wiki

In the years I've been here on the wiki, I could never have imagined what kind of growth and development would lead up to this point. I've seen users of all kinds come and go, but one point has and will always stay the same. We are a collaborative project, thus all of our content comes from our hard-working editors who dedicate their time to the common goal of providing free and accessible knowledge about World War II to all.

That is why it is imperative that you, the reader, understand that the future of the wiki truly depends you. While the hosting for the wiki is free, the content is as well. Our editors are not paid, nor forced to do anything. We contribute our time and our knowledge purely for the learning of others.

Recently, there has…

WWII Fact: Today, the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano was sunk by an American submarine, the largest ship ever sunk by such a craft Hello everyone! It's been a couple months since the last newsletter, meaning it must be time for this one. Of course as indicated by the large banner atop the page, the biggest news this month is probably the drive to get 1,600 articles by Christmas. Overall progress has been a bit slow, but the number of new articles climbed a bit nonetheless. In other news, all of the wiki's infoboxes have been upgraded to the new portable infobox standard, meaning that they are less complicated overall, making for easier editing and they should appear much cleaner when viewed on mobile devices. Accompanying these upgrades…

Hello everyone! Sorry for the delay in newsletters, but I wanted to make sure that as much news as possible was in this edition. Let us start off of course with the World War II fact of the day as always. Today in 1944, Finland signed an armistice with the Soviet Union. Anyway, in these past weeks since the last newsletter, quite a lot has happened. Perhaps the most notable of these events is our shout-out from the YouTuber, The Mighty Jingles and the subsequent influx of new contributors that has followed. As noted in a previous announcement, we are very happy to welcome all of you who saw our shout-out and hope you will continue to edit with us for a long time. Remembering the 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II

Hello everyone! Today is a shorter news update meant to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. It can be hard to comprehend that such a deadly conflict began and ended just 70 years ago. That is why we run this site, to promote public knowledge on the war. I don't have much time to write this post, but I will leave it here as a reminder to think back from time to time and remember the sacrifices of those who created the world as we know it today. We cannot let history, particularly history this important be forgotten.

No Time to Edit

Hello everyone,

Today I will be discussing a fact that is truly beginning to show itself on the wiki's front page polls. This fact is that many of our readers who want to contribute simply do not have the time to. While it may appear that there is nothing to change about this issue, I am writing this blog post to tell people that there is. This blog post is a message to everyone that reads the wiki and wants to contribute. My request to all of you is simply to do one thing every day you visit the wiki. This can be something easy like creating your account on day one and then uploading a photo on day two or it can be something a bit harder like creating a stub one day and adding a paragraph to it everyday until its done.

It may not seem like m…

The Jeep: Humble Beginnings

The Willys Jeep is known as one of the most versatile and widely used military vehicles in history. The Jeep was born out of the need for a light military vehicle capable of navigating difficult terrain while still being able to carry at least four, fully equipped troops and in some cases, towing light anti-tank guns or supply trailers. The first Jeep came into concept on June 27, 1940, while the war was already raging in Europe and North Africa. The American Quartermaster Corps Ordnance Technical Commitee, released the specifications for a new military vehicle, and set the deadline for a prototype on 22 July. While various designs emerged, the one the US Army took most interest in, was the Bantam prototype. This little vehicle, while not …

Jagdtiger

Panzerjäger Tiger Ausf. B was the official designation for the Jagdtiger Heavy tank destroyer. Ordinance number Sd. Kfz. 186 was a lengthened Tiger II chassis with a 128mm PaK 80 mounted in a casemate (fully attached/non-moving) turret, with armor up to 250mm thick (front of casemate). This style of tank production allowed for bigger guns and ease of production, but was somewhat of a hassle for the six man crew as the gun could only turn so much to the sides before they would be required to turn the whole tank (10 degrees Left or Right). Production began in July of 44', with the first combat units being equipped in September of that year. They were issued to only two different units, one was the 653rd Schwere Panzerjager Battalion, receivin…

Air Combat Over Kursk

As many would eventually grow to remember the Battle of Kursk and by extension the Battle of Prohorovka, German Operation Citadel would host the largest tank battle in history, however, Kursk was also a milestone in terms of the sheer amount of aircraft also present during the whole of confrontation. For example, just in a single series of predawn raids against German airfields around Kharkov before the Battle of Kursk, over 400 Soviet aircraft participated. Never again would the Luftwaffe be in any position of sustained air superiority or consistent air to ground support.

71st Anniversary of Invasion of Normandy

Today, seventy-one years ago was the beginning of the Normandy Landings. The date which many say marked the effective downfall of Nazi Germany. Of course by this time, Allied paratroopers had already been dropped behind German lines in France and the German offensives in the East had been all but destroyed. The Normandy Landings were the result of months of planning and tactics being combined into a huge gamble, but in the end, they paid off with the successful liberation of Western Europe. If they prevented years worth of further fighting in the East and in Italy is left up to speculation by historians, however they were paramount in tying down hundreds of thousands of German troops and resources. So this anniversary, be sure to remember …

Nuts - By Russell F. Weigley

The following incident occurred during the German offensive in the Battle of the Bulge, 1944.

It is not surprising that the enemy detected in the westerly battles a scarcity of American infantry greivous enough to warrant a surrender demand. About noon on December 22, four Germans under a flag of truce entered the lines of Company F of the 327th. A major, a captain, and two enlisted men, they described themselves as 'parlementaires'. The commander of the 327th could not immediately be found, so it was the regimental operations officer who received  from the Germans a written note from 'The German Commander', which he delivered to division heaquarters. The note reffered to the progress of German spearheads farther west towards the Meuse as ev…

The To-Do List

Hello everyone! Today I come with a different form of newsletter/update. Today I will be discussing the various things that will have to be done on the wiki in the next couple of months. While they may not be absolute priorities, they are things that I have marked as being necessary to the development of the wiki. They can be found below:

  • 1 Image Summaries
  • 2 Clean up All Articles in the 'Articles for Cleanup' Category
  • 3 Complete the Navboxes
  • 4 Improve the Visual Design of the Wiki

Not only do these small pieces of text help the wiki's SEO, they help our contributors to know the source of images. This is especially important for the Image Archive which relies heavily on sourcing historical images.

Ultimately, our goal on the wiki is to have all arti…

Newsletter December 29th, 2014

Hello everyone! It has been quite a while since the previous wiki newsletter so I suppose it is about time that a new one is released. Let's start off with the fact of the day which is that today in 1944, the siege of Budapest had begun. As for changes to the wiki, besides the obvious changing improvement drive, is fairly minimal. As is now usual, the rest of the minor changes will be listed below. Our spotlight from Wikia has since ended. On a global scale, the new navigation bar at the top of each page has been modified for a new "modern" look. Back to the wiki, infoboxes have been implemented on many more articles and we are ever closer to our goal of maintaining high quality articles.

The Wiki has now hit an incredible milestone. We ha…

Japanese Reconnaissance Tactics

Sobaku Doctrine (Japanese for 'Reconnaissance') is a general name given to a series of tactics used by Japanese planners during World War II, especially in the harsh conditions of the Pacific Islands. It was especially adapted to jungle warfare because of the key component of the tactic, stealth. It consisted of constant reconnaissance of enemy positions with as little disturbance as possible.

The reconnaissance troops were then instructed to map out enemy positions, most often troops would sketch them. The most important target to mark were machine gun nests and mortar positions. Then, the reconnaissance troops would make their way back to their observation posts. The most important findings were immediately radioed back to command.

The Development of the Flakpanzer

The development of the famous German ‘Flakpanzer’ series began very early on in the combat history of the Wehrmacht. The first needs for such vehicles came about around the time of the Battle of France in which German military planners came to the conclusion that horse-drawn or tractor driven Flak guns and equipment simply could not keep up with the ever advancing Panzer and motorized infantry forces. Furthermore, once set up, these weapons had little in the way of protection.

However, at that period in time, the need while relevant, was minor in comparison to others. Standard German half-tracks fitted with anti-aircraft weapons also served to answer the need for mobilized Flak, if anything, they performed their function well in the short t…

Allied Anti-Tank Grenades

For the first installment of historical essay to be featured on the wiki, I copied over this essay written by SENIRAM. Should anyone else be interested in publishing their own historical essay, please note that the only requirements are that proper references be provided at the bottom of the work and that the essay be published on the wiki blog section. Thank You

The Allied forces used a large number of grenades designed to deal with enemy armoured vehicles. These weapons came in a variety of different shapes and forms but had similar basic principles.

Unlike the other Allies, the Soviets had neglected development of anti tank weapons, forcing them to rapidly develop some kind of infantry anti tank capability in 1940. The first effort was th…

Honoring the 75th Anniversary of World War II

Hello everyone! After some hiatus, I have come to bring you a slightly different update. This one will be honoring the 75th Anniversary of World War II which took place on September 1st of this year. World War II was one of the most destructive wars in human history with well over 60 million casualties suffered on both sides, mostly civilians. The result of the conflict was the creation of two global superpowers and the beginning of the Cold War. Another direct effect was the advancement of technology beyond imagination with the full implementation of jet engines in new aircraft designs, effective radar systems, ballistic missiles, etc.

As a historical wiki, it is our duty to document the histories of those brave combatants who gave their …

Getting rid of the Old Achievement System

Hello fellow users,

I was curious as to how many of you stand on keeping or abolishing the old wikia provided achievements. I honestly would prefer to turn them off and replace them with userbox achievements, since with templates they can look neater, are far more controlled so unfair happenings (like if the days counter in the days spent editing achievement stops working) do not happen. I also have a couple ideas for some special achievements. Also, the old achievements right now are clogged with editors whom some have left two years ago. If need be, I can arrange a project page (and possible template?) for users to have a leaderboard like is now. Perhaps users are in favor of turning them off for a week to see what happens? 16:18,7/30/201…

A Personal Goal

Hello all readers of the wiki!

I would like to take the time to announce my 10,000th edit here on the wiki. I first came when the wiki only had a mere 68 articles and was in desparate need of attention, now look at it. I could not be prouder of the fellow editors who have joined me along the way and who will join me into the future. The wiki's growth from relatively abandoned to nearly 1,000 articles shows how much effort everyone has put in these past few years. Best regards to everyone! 04:09,6/17/2014 04:09, June 17, 2014 (UTC)

Today in World War II History - October 7

There’s no one left in Kazary to complain, no one to tell, no one to cry. Silence and calm hover over the dead bodies buried under the collapsed fireplaces now overgrown by weeds. This quiet is much more frightening than tears and curses.

Old men and women are dead, as well as craftsmen and professional people: tailors, shoemakers, tinsmiths, jewellers, house painters, ironmongers, bookbinders, workers, freight handlers, carpenters, stove-makers, jokers, cabinetmakers, water carriers, millers, bakers, and cooks; also dead are physicians, prothesists, surgeons, gynaecologists, scientists — bacteriologists, biochemists, directors of university clinics — teachers of history, algebra, trigonometry.

Dead are professors, lecturers and doctors ofsc…

This is the start of my blog on this wiki. Its going to be about what this wiki is missing and every post will be about a different issue.

My first issue of intrest is that most articles are missing infoboxs. I recently addeded one to Battle of Iwo Jima but lots of articles are mssing infoboxs.

Personally, I would love to see many more articles about units and personal equipment. Of course I also agree that there should be more navboxes on other articles, but I would prefer to focus more on content.

It was found in the English Channel and it was apparently shot down during the Battle of Britain by a Boulton Paul Defiant. It will be a difficult undertaking but will be like no other recovery. Good luck and perhaps once restored, an editor here will be able to see it in person! --15:31,5/3/2013 15:31, May 3, 2013 (UTC)

Anyway, as you may have already heard in the last few updates of the last newsletter entry, the wiki now has German translations of some of its pages. The interwiki links are visible on the few pages such as the SdKfz 251 Hopefully as time passes, many more pages will be translated so that our German audience can share the same experience. I am recruiting editors to help export and translate for those interested. The main effects of this change are...

Newsletter - March 2nd, 2013

Welcome to the first newsletter of the blog type! From now on all newsletter entries will be entered as blog posts. If you would like to view the original newsletters, then you can view them here. Link Anyway, the fact for today is that the Battle of the Bismarck Sea began. I can't say that many changes have been made to wiki administration but the Stub Movement V3 is still on so anyone can still earn more ranks at this point as long as the try to fix as many stubs as possible. 17:30,3/2/2013 17:30, March 2, 2013 (UTC)

UPDATE: The following piece of information is very important and I strongly encourage those on the wiki to reply if they can. The wiki needs several editors to translate all of the wiki's articles and information into German. O…
