Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle was a French military general and statesman. He was the leader of Free France (1940–44).

Early life[]
The son of a minor aristocrat, de Gaulle was raised as a strict Catholic, and studied at Saint-Cyr, a military school founded by Napoleon.[1]
Military career[]
Serving as an officer under Marshal Pétain, de Gaulle was wounded five times, before becoming a Prisoner-of-War at Verdun in 1916.[1]
