The Imperial Japanese Navy, or IJN, was the navy of the Empire of Japan from 1869 to 1947, in that year the IJN was dissolved after their loss in World War II. At the beginning of the war the IJN had arguably the most powerful fleet of ships. However, the IJN's strength quickly dissolved after the suffered many losses caused by the Americans' equally powerful Navy.

The Imperial Japanese Navy and the Imperial Japanese Army grew up differently. The Japanese Army and Navy hated each other from their rivalries. The Imperial Japanese navy sought to westernize and base its power off of the British Navy ideals. The Imperial Japanese Army on the other hand sought to be more traditional and highly nationalistic.
