The Portland-class of cruisers were two heavy cruisers produced by the United States Navy during the interwar period after World War I. Designed to be more like fleet flagships, the two ships had more space for flag officers and their staff. The ships were also longer than the previous Northampton-class and had a new bow shape. Both ships served in the Pacific Theater of the war, where USS Indianapolis was sunk in July 1945.
