The SU-152 was a self-propelled gun used by the Soviet Union during World War II.

Description[]

The SU-152 was based upon the KV-1 chassis and as such used a single W-2-K Engine to propel itself at speeds of up to 43 km/h on roadways. Operating with a range of only about 100-200 kilometers, the SU-152 required frequent refueling and was very slow in combat.[1] The vehicle's biggest strengths came with its fairly decent armor and its significant armament. This armament consisted of a single 152 mm M1937 Howitzer with an additional 12.7 mm DShK Heavy Machine Gun for use against aircraft. Because of the large caliber of the main weapon, the SU-152 was capable of reliably defeating heavy German armored vehicles such as the Panzer V Panther, Panzer VI Tiger, and SdKfz 184 Ferdinand tank destroyer, earning the type the nickname of "Beast Slayer".

The SU-152 had a crew of five men who were capable of putting out 1.5 rounds per minute, with each armor piercing round weighing approximately 48.8 kg. With high explosive, even a near miss could destroy or at the very least disable an armored vehicle. The total weight of the vehicle itself was about 45,500 kg while its total length was 8.9 m.[2]
