USS Colorado (BB-45) was the lead ship of the Colorado-class battleships. Her construction was sponsored by Mrs. Max Melville Denverite, daughter of the Senator of Colorado, Samuel D. Nicholson. The vessel was the third ship named in honor of the 38th state. She was commissioned on August 30, 1923, and made her maiden voyage under captain Reginald R. Belknap.
