Gallery and policy

Hey Fargo, I'd like to suggest that we implement galleries on pages here on the wiki. You, see, I've come across quite a few pages that have to many images in the main article body, thus overcrowding the page. The images are useful so perhaps implementing galleries will be pretty useful to display images on a page without overcrowding them. What do you think?

Secondly, I've finished rewriting the Manual of Style, you view a draft of it here before it is impemented just to make sure we agree on everything. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 59, 9/22/2014

RE: Policy

Hey Fargo, thanks for getting back, I was getting worried about a lack of communication in our community, since some users have not responded to some of my messages. But anyway, I've implemented the new manual of style, I'm still working on the naming policy, but that will be up and running soon. Once that policy is implemented, I'll appreciate it if you updated the wiki newsletter to include policy updates. Thanks again. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  10: 25, 9/29/2014

The joint World War One Wiki merger sounds like a good idea. I would be willing to merge the two wikis.

RE: Historical Essay

Hey Fargo, that sounds like a brilliant idea. I was also thinking of a blog system for topics, it seems you just got to it before me. We should implement this as soon as possible, as it will be a good way to benefit the community, as they can now express their personnel learning here on the wiki about what they bare a greater interest in. Also, I'd like to ask, can we implement galleries here on the wiki? I've noticed that many articles have a lot of pictures in them, that if not in a gallery, overcrowd the page, especially now that we have the infoboxes. Your thoughts? MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 27, 10/13/2014

Perhaps we can. Just remember that we can't really put small images on pages, as viewers might not even see them, so bare that in mind. I think actually, that the only best ways to display the images in a gallery or in an image archive, which you have already implemented. Maybe we should just leave it at that. Thanks for your time. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 39, 10/14/2014

Disciplinary actions

Hey Fargo, before I do anything hasty, I'd like to ask if we should take disciplinary action against SENIRAM for plagiarizing, writing in the first person, and supporting facism in the Royal Italian Army page. This was brought to my attention by Crazy Frog Fish. Perhaps a seven or fourteen day block should be implemented for this, or is it too late? MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  10: 18, 10/16/2014

Tell me, has SENIRAM been guilty of plagiarizing or any other offenses against our policies in the past? MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 18, 10/17/2014
In that case, this cannot be said to be his first time offense, therefor I feel we should implement a seven day block as disciplinary action. A friend of mine who's also a Wikian was blocked on another wiki for plagiarizing images five times. Even though he was only blocked after his fifth offense. I think it is necessary to show the rest of the community that plagiarism will not be tolerated, as it is more serious than people think. We can leave him a message informing him why the block has been implemented so he will at least know what is going on. Are you in favor of this? MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 47, 10/18/2014

Re: Tough choices

Okay Fargo, I understand the points you gave me. In the interests of the 'community', instead of just blocking SENIRAM, I've issued him another warning against plagiarizing articles. Please note, that if I catch him in the future for plagiarizing, I will have to block him, as we can't just let our warning go ignored. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  11: 14, 10/20/2014

Edit Summary

I don't see what the fuss is about, since I only did that once.

Anyway, I won't do it again, although I didn't think anyone would object to me writing something mildly humorous in the edit summary, rather than my standard mantra 'WWII -> World War II' or 'Minor edit.' Crazy Frog Fish (talk) 01:28, November 28, 2014 (UTC)

RE: Infobox Inquiry

Hey Fargo. You know, I haven't noticed the change in text color in the infoboxes at all. I do remember a while ago I requested for Wikia staff to activate some {{:#image}} thingy, for the exact reason because the Battle Infobox is broken. You see, that infobox isn't just your ordinary infobox layout, there's lots of {{Infocell}} templates in it, each of which requires another template, and another template, and another template, to work properly. I asked at Community Central about it and they said to fix the error we see in the infobox on the Battle of Okinawa page, is that that {{:#image}} thingy must be activated by Wikia staff. I sent through a request for it but never received a reply, maybe I should try again. As for the text color in the other infoboxes, I don't know how that could have happened, but I'll see to fixing it in the near future, I'm just seriously caught up in some other stuff right now, but I'll see to it ASAP. Thanks! MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 08, 12/8/2014

Hey Fargo, I looked into what could have happened to the infobox text, turns out that this new global navigation introduced by Wikia is still slightly flawed, meaning it can bugger up some coding, I've seen this happen on other wikis too, but I also hear that once Wikia has worked out all the flaws, we should be back to normal. Thanks, MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 55, 12/9/2014

Hey Fargo

I had a look on WW1 Wiki and saw a bunch on contributions being made and I see a massive development in this wiki. I would like to congratulate you for your service and also your service to World War One wiki. --Nelfen (talk) 04:38, January 16, 2015 (UTC)

Vehicles page update

Hey Fargo. I've updated the Vehicles of World War II page. From the changes I've made we need some special images for the page sections. I'm asking you since you know how to prepare them. Here is a list of images we need with a few suggestions.

  • Section: Armored Cars - Suggestion: SdKfz 234
  • Section: Heavy Tanks - Suggestion: Panzer VI Tiger I
  • Section: Remote Controlled Tanks (Germany)/Teletanks (Soviet Union) - Suggestion: German Goliath
  • Section: Imporvised Armored Fighting Vehicles (Soviet Union) - Suggestion: I don't know what can be used here
  • Section: Aerosans (Soviet Union) - Suggestion: Once again, I'm not sure what can be used here
  • Section: Cruiser Tanks (Great Britain) - Suggestion: Comet or Cromwell Tank

I hope you'll be able to find images for all of them. I'm still working on some of the links on that page, but will finish them up in a day or two. Thanks in advance. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 34, 3/3/2015

Well it's looking good so far. It'll be good to have another well organized list page here on the wiki. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  10: 47, 3/8/2015

Hey there.  I just got the PB4Y-2 Privateer page up.  It still needs some love, but it is there; though I'm pretty sure I messed some things up on the backside.  Mvandemark (talk) 17:03, April 9, 2015 (UTC)

RE: Good Work

Hey Fargo, thanks for the congrats, it really feels good to know that all the work I've put in is appreciated and counts for something. I've noticed in some of daily updates which I receive via email that our views are starting to rise over 1,000 a day, which is really great. We certainly have moved one step closer to our goal of being the best online source for World War II. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  13: 27, 4/10/2015

Thompson Page

Well hell, I went down the line and found a red link of a weapon I had info on.  Sorry about that.

Image archives

Hey Fargo, can you please tell me were I can put a link to an image archive on a page, and what is the general format/arrangement for an image archive? It's just something I've never done here before. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  13: 26, 4/11/2015

I am about to begin writing an article on the Dresden Raid for a newsletter I contribute to and I don't see on here, I want to make sure before I create one so I don't duplicate again.

Just for conversational purposes

Hey, just thought i would pop you a quick question, Fargo. I have heard that the IS-3 was not used on the eastern front as far as combat and was not seen on that front until the Victory Parade, but some claim that it did see combat in Berlin, possibly the Seelow Heights, what is your personal belief in this subject? Chester Chism (talk) 19:56, May 2, 2015 (UTC)

Yes, such information from a good source would be great to have. I love the thought of such a thing, but i, like you, just don't think that any were present on the front, i just thought i would shoot ya' that one and get your personal opinion on the subject, but hey, how about the pro-russians in the Ukraine firing up that old IS-3, huh, i saw that and thought it was really something.

Hey Fargo, Commando Conceptor attempted to report you to me for removing messages from public talk pages, mainly on Talk:Mercedes-Benz W31 Typ G4. I looked into it but I can clearly see that you were quite correct in doing so. I asked him about his comments he made on the talk page and has not replied in the last 48 hours so I'm closing the matter. Another thing I wanted to mention is that with our new drive going, I think the Wiki Newsletter is in need of an update. That's all, thanks! MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  15: 16, 5/16/2015

Something's up

Hey Fargo, something's not right with the upload page. I can't upload any images. I do everything necessary, and click the "upload file" button, but then it just reloads the upload page and tells me that no changes have been saved yet, and to click the publish button!? Just thought I'd let you known that something's just not right. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 26, 5/22/2015

PS. It does with the preview page as well. I click preview and then click publish but I then get a notification telling me the same thing. I can only publish an edit directly off of the main edit screen. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 29, 5/22/2015
Do you know what makes this even more weird? Just after I left you the second message concerning this, I was suddenly able upload images and publish edits off of the preview screen! I suspect this has to do with Wikia revamping their whole system, I've been seeing some odd changes around the place recently. But not to worry, everything seems to working here fine now. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 42, 5/22/2015

Re: Battle Infobox

Hey Fargo, I'm really sorry for the late reply, I didn't even realize that you'd left me a message. I had another look at the coding and tested the infobox on the Battle of Okinawa page. Everything seems to be in order, thanks for getting on Wikia staff's case, I requested that extension to be activated on our wiki months ago but never heard from them. Just remember to keep the infobox width at 300px, the image can be anything between 250px and 300px. Also note that if your monitor resolution is set to 1024x768px, the image infobox image will appear to have distorted the infobox in the preview screen, but it looks fine once published. Okay then, I'll see to implementing the other infoboxes related to the Battle Infobox in the coming weeks. Thanks again! MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 01, 6/9/2015

Re: Fixed template

I've had a look at the Public Domain and Fairuse templates. They appear to be fine, but I think that the image on the Fairuse template is a bit too big, maybe just reducing it's pixel size so that it is square with the text should make it look a bit better. The Public Domain template is perfect, but it just needs the final line in the main body of the text to be moved one or two spaces down. Other than that, they look great. The Battle of Kursk page looks awesome too, good work! MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 15, 6/10/2015

Hey, Fargo, it's been a while since my last action, but i was on today and wrote a blog post, would like it if you read it and gave me your opinion.

As far as i have studied (not much but...) i have not found anything about the IS-3, i am pretty sure that your right.

Thank you! I'll get started!

Non-mobile friendly code

Hey Fargo, for the past two days I've been contributing via my mobile device, and have that forcing NOTOC on pages has negative effect for editors editing on mobile, especially for Windows Phone 8 using the Internet Explorer browser, as only allows contributors to edit by section. I think this has probably been something holding us back, especially in the mobile area. I think that it should be included in the Manual of Style that NOTOC should not be used on pages, a,d removed from all existing pages. This will probably see a great boost for the wiki on mobile viewership. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  10: 29, 8/9/2015

It looks great. Thanks. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  13: 17, 8/10/2015

Picking up

Hey Fargo, just when I wanted to take some leave from the wiki, things start picking up. We've got some new editors, and I see other new features are also starting to be implemented, which is a sign that we are certainly growing. I actually wanted to ask you if I can help out with the newsletter a bit. I'm also going to be adding some new blogs too.

You know, I was at 255 days on my last every day badge, and I botched it yesterday, so now I'm back to square one. Not to worry, though, I guess I'll just be taking that leave in September next year. :) MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 16, 9/16/2015

Hello Fargo,

I was just wondering, The TOG II was a Super Heavy Tank, but Bovington Tank Museum (Where the TOG II is housed) calls it a Heavy Tank only, so I was just wondering should I go with Bovington or the rest of the internet?

Thanks, UM98

Hello again Fargo,

I am wondering, how do I reference a book in it wiki?

Sorry to message you again Fargo,

Just wondering if you could chang the name of the link on the A22 Black Prince to A43 Black Prince on Vehicles of World War II as it is more historically accurate as it was called that. The A22 was only for Churchills, the Black Prince was called the 'Super Churchill' but had had a different tank number (is that what it is called?). It was not the A22, it was the A43. Thanks UM98

Sorry for this message but I want to clarify, according to my source (listed below), the A33 Heavy Tank and the Excelsior are the same tank, it is possible to make them into one page?

Page rename

Hey Fargo, I'd just like to ask, can you please keep me up to date with your progress on renaming those weapon pages, so that I'll know when to go change the links on the weapons page (to avoid any navigational problems). Thanks.  MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 18, 9/22/2015

Hello Fargo,

Here is the link to the A24 Cruise Tank Mk. VII Cavalier, it won't pick it up on the vehicle lists (i.e. It remains red). Why does it do this, and what can I do to stop it happening again?

Also I need to delete a page as I accidently created it (in the beginning), how can I delete it?

UM98 (talk) 00:56, September 27, 2015 (UTC)

Rename progress

Hey Fargo, I've finished correcting all of the redlinks on the weapons list. Could please let me no when you're done rename the relevant pages so that I can change the filled out links. Then we can put that task behind us. Thanks. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  08: 12, 9/29/2015

Okay, I'll be sure to make sure all those redirects are okay, and then change the links on the weapons list itself to make everything look proper. Thanks. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  14: 21, 10/3/2015
Hey Fargo, I'd just like to mention, that the Browning Hi-Power page should be renamed to Browning M1935 GP, and the Panzerschrech page to RPzB 43. Thanks. MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  11: 24, 10/4/2015

Setting up Flagicons

Fargo84 wrote:

Recently I've been trying to set up custom flag icons on the WWII wiki and have run into some difficulty. To begin with, I copied over some code from Wikipedia, but several errors popped up and I could tell that what I copied was part of a much larger system. So, I've restarted and have ended up with four basic templates

Template:Flag and Template:Flag United States are the equivalent of Template:Country data on Wikipedia, just renamed. This time, the code I copied seems to work better, though I still have some problems such as not being about to attach a caption next to the flag. Based on my requirements, I was wondering if someone could alert me as to where I need to make changes.

Show a flag icon
Be able to put any caption next to the icon

Thanks in advance!

Looking at the Wikipedia system, I think this is how it works...

  • {{flagicon|countryname}} is used on pages
  • But USA has so many flags variations, a separate template has to be created for the "shortword" {{country data countryname}} templates which is embedded in the {{flagicon|countryname}} template
  • So it involves a lot of data templates to get it to work
  • A search tells me that you have about 30 flag images. So it would be less complicated to just create a template for each

This is how I create a template...
I created the flag icon as I want it to display. So for flag, 23px width and caption

[[File:Flag of the United States.png|23px|hover caption]] adjacent caption   =   hover caption adjacent caption

With {{{1|}}} representing the hover caption and {{{2|}}} representing the adjacent caption, the template would be

[[File:Flag of the United States.png|23px|{{{1|}}}]] {{{2|}}}

So if we call the template Flagicon USA,

{{Flagicon USA|USA caption|current USA flag}}   =   USA caption current USA flag

So, I've begun work on a page for the Vickers-Peerless, a makeshift Greek armored car that saw limited service in the early 1940s.  Because it was so uncommon and rarely used, very few photographs of it exist.  I've managed to find a few pictures through the internet, but most of the better quality ones have watermarks.  Would it be acceptable to use these in the page, or would it look too unprofessional?

Hello Fargo, my apologies for my unexplained abscence, but due to personal reasons I have been unable to contribute to the wiki. While I do not disregard any of my work here, my contributions were rather uneasy to make due to my situation, which is rather difficult in nature. In this time, I have found that I have slowly lost interest in the subject of this wiki and in Wikia in general. I have experienced a drastic realignment in my personal views and feel that my interest are being strongly drawn elsewhere. Therefor, I wish to resign my administrative powers and officially state that I will no longer be contributing to the wiki. I wish you all the best of luck in further developing the wiki's content and growing the community. Sincerely,  MadMarek  Talk  Contribs  WW II Wiki - Admin  09: 00, 3/5/2017
